‘About Now more than Ever'

The theme ‘Now More Than Ever’ chosen by Reconciliation Australia responds to the failed referendum in 2024 and the hope for Treaty in Victoria to lead other states in Australia. Many non-indigenous people would like to know how they can meaningfully participate in the delicate dance of reconciliation. Many people are mindful of the current cultural load on First Peoples and would like to help progress self-determination but are not sure how.

With over 65 years of history walking together with First Peoples, Initiatives of Change Australia ( IofCA) have delivered 83 truth telling forums led by First Peoples in the past three years. During this time Turruk: our cultural intelligence program has engaged over 30 First Nations leaders with over 3440 registrations . In 2021 it won a United Nations Intercultural Innovation Award, as part of the IofC International Trustbuilding Program. Along the way IofCA have discovered some useful patterns of walking together to deliver immersive and transformational cultural learning experiences. For this event and others, we support aligned grass roots organizations like the Murnong First Peoples Gathering Place in Glen Iris, to provide a culturally safe place in inner Southeast Melbourne.

We also know that many Elders are encouraging emerging First Nations leaders and different voices can have their say about solutions in closing the gap. We know that traditional panels can often be overwhelming when addressing some of the root causes of intergenerational trauma and cycles of lateral violence. It is often in the smaller breakout groups that some of the lesser heard Indigenous voices can share their truth and can have more meaningful reciprocal exchanges with allies.
